Puppet Adventures  - Come join in this fun puppet show from 11:00 am – 12:00 pm with lots of participation and silly humor at the Rosemead Public Library!  This program is for children of all ages.

Lanterns for Year of the Dragon -  Join in a Chinese lantern making workshop designed for those 10 years of age and up (including adults)  from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm in celebration of the year of the dragon.  Materials will be provided but please bring a stapler. Please sign up at the Rosemead Library information desk.  This program is presented by the Library’s Asian Pacific Resource Center.

Karaoke Contest and Lunar Dinner  --- Co-sponsored by the Rosemead Chamber of Commerce, location will be the 888 Seafood Restaurant, 8450 Valley Blvd, #124. The meal will be a 12 course affair at a cost of $50 per person. Starting time is 6:30 with serving of meal beginning at 7:00, For reservations and questions please call the Chamber office at 626/288-0811.

 How to raise money for RIF (and other purposes) – Katherine Monte of the RSD’s Encinita Elementary school will share how she has both improved literacy scores and supplemented her library budget for RIF and other purposes by $10,000 in recent years.

 

RIF at Encinita is used in concert with parental and service club involvement plus six other programs to achieve maximum results. These programs include:

 

·        Scholastic Book Fair

 

·        7 Habits of Highly Effective People

 

·        Read Across America

 

·        National Library Week

 

·        Take a Drive Into Summer

 

·        Renaissance Accelerated Reading Program

 

This presentation will briefly review the above programs and the underlying  support structure, including volunteer involvement. It is designed to help both faculty staff and Kiwanian RIF coordinators in meeting the RIF funding support targets for the next two years.

Awakening the Body, Mind & Soul – This free event at the Rosemead Public Library, running from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm, is inspired by the structure of I-Ching & Tao Te Ching, philosophical quasi-religious systems of China.

 

Henry Chang, philosopher and holistic life coach, will share his view that everything that happens in our lives is the best arrangement in the big universe.   This event is sponsored by Green Menu (an Alhambra based vegan/vegetarian-friendly restaurant referral system).

SGV Youth Summit – held in Rosemead at Garvey School (2720 Jackson Street, Rosemead) from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. This event for teen youth from all geographic areas will include free workshops designed to teach youth four types of leadership skills (Advocacy, Transition, Health and Diversity) plus convey useful knowledge in practical and social areas. A complete listing of the 42 teen only (no parents allowed) workshops may be found here.

 

K-Family groups plus many others will have booths at the event. In addition there will be free lunch plus a youth talent showcase (the latter starting at 2:30 pm).

Read to a Dog - BARK (Beach Animals Reading with Kids) is a program at the Rosemead Public Library that encourages children to increase their reading skills and self-confidence. This will be done from 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm with kids reading aloud to certified therapy dogs.  Children gain confidence in reading to a non-judgmental listener. A study at UC Davis has shown this approach to improve reading skills up to 20% in an eight week period.
