Reader’s Challenge - Rosemead Library’s Reader’s Challenge continues thru April 7, with prizes being awarded on April 14, 2012 in honor of National Library Week.  Applications are available at the Library.

 

Thursday, April 5, 2012 - RKC Regular Meeting 

 

Earthquake Preparedness – Our own imitable Lou Reade, retired firefighter and perpetual dynamo will review with us individual responsibilities for earthquake preparedness. This topic is especially appropriate as April commences the City of Rosemead’s 2012-2013 preparedness challenge.

 

Thursday, April 5, 2012 – Library Event

 

Princeton Advanced Placement Review – strategy discussion of the subject exams administered in May. Nearly 30 potential subjects are involved, a sufficiently high score can mean reduced tuition and even advance college credit. This preparatory session from 6:00-7:30 includes practice exams to take home and return for grading. (Note: this event is repeated on April 24, 2012)

 

Friday, April 6, 2012 --- RSD School Event

 

Shuey's Luau - For the 59th straight year the Emma W. Shuey elementary school (8472 E. Wells St, Rosemead) will be presenting its annual spring festival, Shuey's Luau, beginning at 10:00 am.

 

Saturday, April 7, 2012 – City Event

 

Egg Extravaganza - The free “Great Egg Hunt” from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at Garvey Park (7933 Emerson Place) Join the Easter Bunny for tons of fun activities and attractions. Tickets are required for the game booths, moon bounces, and rock climbing. They can be purchased at the event for a nominal fee. There will be no refunds for unused tickets. Refreshments are also available for purchase.

Egg Hunt Age Divisions


Division A     (Infants to 35 months): Staff will distribute eggs
Division I:     3 - 4 yrs. of age - Parents are not allowed
Division II:     5 - 6 yrs. of age - Parents are not allowed
Division III:     7 - 10 yrs. of age - Parents are not allowed

 

Thursday, April 12, 2012 - RKC Special Meeting 

 

RKC Board Meeting - Per decision at the March Board meeting, the RKC Board meeting in lieu of program is now being held on the second Thursday of the month.  It is expected that a detailed agenda will be emailed to members i advance of the meeting.


Saturday. April 14, 2012 – Library Event

 

Spring Book Sale – conducted from 12:000-4:00 p, by the Friends of the Rosemead Library this annual event features “a large selection of gently used adult, juvenile, teen, magazines, movies, children's books and, books in different languages.”  Proceeds go towards support of the library’s chide, adult, and teen programs.

 

(Note: this event continues during the sam etime slot on Tuesday, April 17, Wednesday, April 18. And Thursday April 19, 2012)

Leadership Day – The Mildred B Jansen Elementary School, recently designated a leader in me Lighthouse school” via a partnership with the Panda Corporation and Stephen Covey, will recap the road it has traveled in a special celebration from 8:15 am – 2:30 pm.

Arbor Day Celebration – Willard Elementary School (3152 Willard Avenue) will be the site for a 9:00 celebration which will include the planting of a tree along with exhibits and handouts for the entire community For more information, please call (626) 569-2162.

Home Health Care - Stephanie Reade, a coordinator with Elevate Health Personal Care Servicers (according to their website an integrated provider of prevention rehabilitation and home health services  to elevate wellness) will discuss he unique options supplied by firms such as hers as opposed to hospice, board and care or convalescent assistance.

Read to a Dog - BARK (Beach Animals Reading with Kids) is a program at the Rosemead Public Library that encourages children in the K-6 grade range to increase their reading skills and self-confidence. This will be done from 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm with kids reading aloud to certified therapy dogs.  Children gain confidence in reading to a non-judgmental listener. A study at UC Davis has shown this approach to improve reading skills up to 20% in an eight week period. Saturday, April 21, 2012 – Garvey School District/Rosemead Event 

 

School Site Community Cleanup - this will be a multi-campus effort at Garvey School District schools located in Rosemead.  It has also been designated the official Kiwanis One Day project for the Rosemead Family of Kiwanis Clubs. Last year’s effort involving neighbors and community groups  drew plaudits from many.

Sunday, April. 22, 2012 - Don Bosco Event

 

Don Bosco Open House--- from 12:00-3:00 pm the campus of Don Bosco will be filled with classroom demonstrations and displays plus an alumni car show. These activities will be preceded by a 9:30 am mass immediately followed by a breakfast from Don Bosco's own cooking club.  The open house is principally targeted at Don Bosco alumni but all friends of Don Bosco are welcome.

Asian Youth Center --- Roy Rosell, a member of Rosemead Connections Forum, will discuss the history and programs of the Asian Youth Center, which despite its name also serves Anglo and Hispanic clients. 

 

According to the group’s website, the center has been around since 1989 and operates the May L. To Educational Center in San Gabriel, with more than 9,000 square feet of recreation areas, an indoor basketball court, computer labs, classrooms, and counseling rooms. The organization strives to help at-risk, low income, immigrant and adjudicated youth overcome the many problems they face at home, school and in their neighborhoods through seven program areas

Rosemead Neighborhood Connections - the May edition of the monthly meeting of government agencies. educational institutions, community businesses and groups, religious organizations and service clubs involved with the Rosemead community will begin at 6:00 at the Rosemead Safety Center.

 

Featured this month will be  reports n the GSD/City of Rosemead Beautification Day project, Seven Habits of High Successful People presentation (by Rosemead Mayor Sandra Armenta based on the Lighthouse School recognition event this month at Jansen Elementary), upcoming Drug Awareness workshop in May and the June Relay for Life.

Book Club Discussion – With coffee and tea the Asia Pacific Resource Center of the Rosemead Public Library from 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm presents “a book discussion of Kathryn Stockett's bestseller, "The Help."   Set during the civil rights movement in Jackson, Mississippi a budding writer seeks out the stories of the African American women who take care of the white families in the community.

 

Friday, Apr. 27, 2012 - Don Bosco Event

     

Don Bosco Jazz Night Out --- Don Bosco Tech’s own jazz band features Luca Ellis and a Night of Sinatra Classics beginning at 7:00 p, in the Don Bosco Tech Hall. SAT Practice Test - From 10:00 am to 2:00 pm prospective college enrollees who will have to take the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) can do a "dry run" practice exam to help improve proficiency, courtesy of the Los Angeles County Library and the Kaplan company. All three portions of the actual  exam. All 3 portions of the actual exam (mathematics, English, essay) will be featured.
