will be affording opportunity to  read and discuss these works with other teens from 11:00

and what doesn't; the best way to publicize; new event suggestions and the schedule of

Vegetarian Cooking - learn the joys of meat-free cooking in this free program conducted

in Chinese with English translation from 2:30 pm – 4:30 pm at the Rosemead Public Library.

 

Tuesday, May 8, 2012 - Library Event

 

Princeton Advance Placement Review – strategy discussion of the subject exams  which

were administered in May. Nearly 30 potential subjects are involved. A sufficiently high score

can mean reduced tuition and even advance college credit. This preparatory session from

6:00 pm - 7:30 pm at the Rosemead Public Library  includes practice exams to take home

and return for grading.

Origami Cards and Flowers - In a celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month

from 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm at the Rosemead Public Library participants will create origami

flowers and cards for mother's day.  All materials will be provided.

 

Saturday, May 12, 2012 – Community Event

 

Postal Service Food Drive --- Each year neighborhood postal carriers pick up massive

amounts of food (canned goods, packages and various types of drinks) for the Los Angeles

food bank system, whose local affiliate is People for People. These collections are one of

the most critical sources of P4P’s year long food distribution effort.

 

Individual volunteers are needed at area post offices from 2:00 pm -6:00 pm or until the post

office dockets are empty of food.- usually before 5:00 pm.  Also needed: $250 per post office

sponsors to cover the cost of a pickup truck and driver. To help call Norene Rand at 626/285-2549.

ACT Practice - From 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Rosemead Public Library prospective college

enrollees who will have to take the ACT (American College Testing) exam  can do a "dry run"

practice exam to help improve proficiency, courtesy of the Los Angeles County Library and the

Kaplin company. Results of the “dry run” will be available on May 19. 2012 (see below).

 

All four basic multiple choice question sections (English, Mathematics, Reading and Science

Reasoning plus an optional section on Writing) will be featured plus a strategy session. ACT

exams are a competitor of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). Both the ACT and SAT exams

are used to measure high school achievement and college success potential. The ACT is

administered six times a year at multiple locations and is accepted by all 4-year colleges and

universities in the United States.

Read to a Dog - BARK (Beach Animals Reading with Kids) is a program at the Rosemead

Public Library that encourages children in the K-6 grade range to increase their reading skills

and self-confidence. This will be done from 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm with kids reading aloud to

certified therapy dogs.  Children gain confidence in reading to a non-judgmental listener. 

A study at UC Davis has shown this approach to improve reading skills up to 20% in an eight

Book Club Discussion – With coffee and tea the Asia Pacific Resource Center of the

Rosemead Public Library from 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm will observe Asian-Pacific Heritage Month

 and the 70th anniversary of Franklin Roosevelt’s Executive Order 9066 (which led to the

incarceration of Americans of Japanese ancestry during World War II), Featured will be

Wakatsuki Houston's "Farewell to Manzanar," the true story of her family's attempt to survive

 the internment. This event is co-sponsored by Cal Humanities, California Center of the

Book and California Reads.

Awakening the Body, Mind & Soul This free event at the Rosemead Public Library,

running from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm, is inspired by the structure of I-Ching & Tao Te Ching,

philosophical quasi-religious systems of China.

 

Henry Chang, philosopher and holistic life coach, will share his view that everything that

happens in our lives is the best arrangement in the big universe.   This event is sponsored

by Green Menu (an Alhambra based vegan/vegetarian-friendly restaurant referral system).

Thursday, May 31, 2012 --- Fine Arts Event (also June 1, 2 and 3)

 

Musicman Production  - Rosemead’s Temple Intermediate School will be presenting

 Meredith Wilson’s “THE MUSIC MAN” on three successive evenings Thursday Friday

and Saturday  May 31st, June 1 & 2 at 7:00 pm plus a matinee performance on  Sunday,

June 3, at 1:00 p.m. Location will be the Temple Intermediate School Gym, 8510 Fern Avenue,
