Magic Show – Magician Allen Oshiro has been blowing

away audiences with his amazing magic programs for

years. A librarian favorite, his highly praised programs

are full of audience participation, magic, and comedy.

The show will run from 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm.

 

Friday, August  3, 2012 – Rosemead Concert

 

Sangria – free Latino and oldies music concert

featuring a 50/50 raffle at Rosemead Park, 4243

Saturday, August 4, 2012 - Library Event

 

PSAT Practice Test  - Proctored by Kaplan, this

workshop is perfect practice for the actual exam.  High

school sophomores and juniors are advised to take this

workshop because if they score well on the PSAT, they

have a chance for a National Merit Scholarship. The

workshop runs from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm – a follow-up

event to discuss test results will be held on Tuesday,

August 14, 2012.

Puerto Rico, Citadels, Cranium.  Ever heard of those?

planning teen programs and services at the library!

National Night Out - the City of Rosemead will celebrate

the 29th annual observance of this event at the Rosemead

Public Safety Center/ Zapopan Park, 8301Garvey Avenue,

from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. It will feature a variety of activities

for all ages including

 

·        Child fingerprinting and face painting,

·        Public safety quiz game for children and adults,

·        Vehicle and child safety tips,

·        Recognition of Neighborhood Watch Block

     Captains and Business Watch Groups

·        Honoring of those who have partnered to keep

     Rosemead safe, including the Los Angeles County

     Sheriff’s Department, Rosemead Public Safety

     Department, Ham Operators and the Rosemead

     Public Safety CONNECTIONS members (including

     the Rosemead Kiwanis Club).

Create an e-book Reader Cover – this enjoyable art

activity from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm enables participants to

create decorative covers for their e-book reader (Kindle,

Nook, etc) from hardback books.  Materials will be

provided but attendees can also bring their own favorite

hardback book from home to use for their cover. Those

interested are asked to sign up at the library Reference

Desk.

prevent foreign insects from getting a foothold in our

Puppet Show - Dream Carver presents a musical

puppet show from 11:00 am – 12:00 pm based on the

children's book by Diana Cohn, to whose works the

Dream Carver organization is dedicated (see here) .

This book is inspired by the life of Manuel Jimenez who

pioneered the now famous Oaxacan woodcarving style.

Vegetarian Cooking – This summer go green with a

hands-on cooking presentation from 2:30 pm – 4:30 pm

for the whole family.  Parents are invited to bring their

kids and learn how to prepare two delicious vegetarian

meals together!  Presented by Green Menu, an

Alhambra-based non-profit group dedicated to

supporting vegan and vegetarian store, restaurants and

Meeting at 3.30 pm at the Rosemead Library (not CMI),

this afternoon satellite meeting of the Rosemead

Kiwanis Club focuses on the Rosemead community

groups, particularly the RKC Family and Network.

Maryvale Report – Rosemarie Boerger, recently

designated as successor to Ann Lobsinger as

Maryvale’s Kiwanis representative, reports on recent

developments and projected new community outreach

efforts by Maryvale and the Sisters of Charity, an

independent Catholic order which has been active in

Los Angeles County for over 150 years.

Book Club Discussion Join in from, 6:30 pm – 7:45 pm

for a discussion of " I Shall Not Hate, A Gaza Doctor's

Journey on the Road to Peace and Human Dignity," by

Izzeldin Abuelaish.

 

On January 16, 2009, Israeli shells hit Abuelaish 's home

killing three of his daughters and his niece.  His response

to the tragedy was to call for the people of the region to

start talking to each other.  His hope is that his daughters

will be "the last sacrifice on the road to peace between the

Palestinians and the Israelis."

ACT Practice Test -  proctored by Kaplan, this is an

alternative exam to the SAT.  The ACT test is more knowledge-

based and accepted by all colleges and universities in the United

States. It will be given from 9:00 am, to 1:00 pm

Afternoon RKC (Rosemead Kiwanis Club) Satellite –

Meeting at 3.30 pm at the Rosemead Public Library  (not CMI),

this afternoon activity sponsored by the Rosemead Kiwanis

Club will feature an orientation PowerPoint for prospective

Rosemead Kiwanis Club members. The public is welcome to

attend as well.

for the 710 freeway – ranging from no-build to various

multi-billion dollar tunnels.
