Up to 5 old photos of your community, your street, celebrations or festivals  will be scanned by llbrary staff from 10:00 am – 6:00 pm. Original and a digital copy will be returned..

Talking Serious Trash – Republic Consolidated has an obligation under a ten year waste disposal contract with the City of Rosemead (backed up by state mandates) starting in July of next year. It requires improved conservation and recycling in Rosemead.

 

How this commitment will be carried out in terms of the business, education and residential segments of our community will be outlined in this report,

Afternoon RKC (Rosemead Kiwanis Club) Satellite – Meeting at 3.30 pm at the Rosemead Public L:ibrary (not CMI), this afternoon event will feature an exchange of information between Kiwanian and other groups about upcoming Rosemead community events.

8/11 Memorial --- A memorial to the victims of the 9/11/2001 attack on the World Trade Center will be held at 6:00 pm in at the Rosemead City Hall in advance of the City Council meeting.

Forgotten History - Award-winning author Icy Smith (Sui Bing Tang) presents a slide show and lecture describing the early history of Chinese  Americans in Southern California. from 2:00 pm  - 3:00 pm

 

The Chinese Americans are the only ethnic group ever to have been barred from entering the United States by a federal immigration law that lasted 61years.  They were denied most basic privileges  -- the right to own property, the right to become citizens, the right to intermarry  -- the gradual attainment  of civil rights took almost a century.

Thursday, September 20, 2012 – Kiwanis Event

 

RKC Installation/Induction/Recognition – The Rosemead Kiwanis Club will hold its installation of officers for the 2012-2013 fiscal year. Also slated will be induction of several new members and recognition for people who led many successful programs. 

 

Location will be the Bahooka Family Restaurant, (4501 Rosemead Boulevard - on the west side at the junction with Lower Azusa Road north of Rosemead High School) at the usual time of 12:10 pm. Meal selection and cost information will be forthcoming.

 

Due to anticipated large turnout this will be a reservations required event. Contact Mario Manzano or Lou Reade for reservations.

Gang Awareness Workshop- Beginning at 7:00 pm this presentation will be held at the Rosemead Safety Center, 8301 Garvey in Rosemead. Parents and community members will be afforded an opportunity to learn about  

This special presentation is intended for parents and community members over the age of 18.

 

Friday, September 21, 2012 – Community Activity

 

Job Fair – Career Partners will be sponsoring this event to help job seekers from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm at 3505 N. Hart Avenue in Rosemead (adjacent to Target). It is being sponsored in conjunction with the Rosemead Chamber of Commerce, City of Rosemead, Republic Services and the Los Angeles County Fire Department. .  Included will be assistance with resume composition and job interviewing techniques plus career development and special emphasis on veteran’s resources.. RKC members will be acting as resume and job interview advisors.

 

Friday, September 21, 2012 – Community Event

 

Crosstown Football Classic  – Rosemead youth move on to attend two separate high schools: Rosemead High School in the El Monte School District and San Gabriel High School in the Alhambra School District. This event, centered around teams from the two schools, is intended to annually help reunite the students from their city of common residence  -- replete with corporate sponsorships, activities and even scholarships. Starting time and location will be announced.

Liver Life Walk – the Rosemead High School Key Club is supplying volunteers to support this event, although not directly participating. The objective is to raise funds to combat liver cancer and assist with victim/survivor support. The 5K walk will be held at the Ocean View Park, 2701 Barnard Way in Santa Monica. Registration starts at 8:00 am and the walk at 10:00. 

 

Tuesday, September 25,  2012 -  Community Fair

 

College Enrollment Fair – a regional college recruiting fair will be held from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm  at the Don Bosco Technical Institute campus, 1151 San Gabriel Blvd., in Rosemead. Local Rosemead area high school students, both public and parochial, are welcome to participate in making connections and find out about various colleges and universities.

Visions and Voices in the Valley – Christopher Trevilla, President of the Nuvein Foundation, shares his organizations efforts in promoting fine arts in the San Gabriel Valley in an address to the Rosemead Kiwanis Club’s luncheon meeting at the California Mission Inn. 

 

This year the Foundation has already been involved with poetry events in several libraries, art walks in La Puente, an exhibit in San Gabriel and participated in the South Pasadena Art Crawl.

Book Club Discussion of 'The Namesake' -- The Asian Pacific Resource Center Book Club will be discussing Jhumpa Lahiri's "The Namsake."  This book is about the Ganguli family, new arrivals from Calcutta, trying their best to become Americans while longing for home.  Jhumpa Lahiri won the Pulitzer Prize for her first collection of short stories "The Interpreter of Maladies," in 2000. The review will run from 6:30 pm – 7:00 pm

Fiesta Fun Walk – Guadalupe Pregnancy Services (GPS -  a Rosemead based pregnancy help center affiliated with the ILS Federation of Pro-Life Pregnancy Help Centers) is sponsoring the GPS Fiesta Fun Walk/Run for L:ife in Rosemead Park (4252 Encinita Avenue - between Mission and Lower Azusa Road)  Registration begins at 8:00 with the walk/run at 9:00.  Hot dogs, tacos, special speakers and musical entertainers will also be featured.

 

GPS offers a variety of services including free pregnancy tests, options counseling, materials assistance (baby supplies and maternity clothes), “Earn While you Learn” parenting and talent programs, classes, Maternal Instincts Program (MIP), natural family planning, relationship mentoring, post-abortion recovery & healing as well as a slate of referrals and assistance to other agencies.

Art Fair – the Fall Spirit Art Festival will be held from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Rosemead Moose Lodge (9304 Mission), sponsored by the Savannah Cemetery Association. RKC Community Affairs Chair Bob Bruesch is on the Cemetery Association board; the RHS Key Club is slated to supply manpower for the event.

2012 Election Workshop – English version -- This important program enables attendees to register to vote, experience the voting process with a demonstration of the voting machine and booth, and discover what to expect on voting day when arriving at one’s designated  polling place. Attendees also learn about the electoral college and why every vote counts! Q & A sessions with LA County Dept. of Registrar-Recorder as well from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm.

An Intimate Evening with Vikki Carr  - Rosemead High School is renaming its music and theater auditorium in honor of one of its most famous graduates, Ms. Vikki Carr. Help in raising funds to refurbish the auditorium and make it accessible for events featuring local talent and visitors from elsewhere can be given by attending this benefit. It will feature a rare personal Southern California visit by Ms. Carr.

 

The intimate concert will be held at the Stevens Steak & Seafood House, 5332 Stevens Place in Commerce beginning at 8:00 pm. General Admission $60.00 which will include supper. All proceeds will benefit the newly named Vikki Carr Performing Arts Center located at Rosemead High School.
