Thursday, November 1, 2012 Rosemead Kiwanis Meeting
NAMI in Rosemead - Shirley Spencer advocacy chair for NAMI (National Alliance for Mental Illness) SGV, a unit of Pacific Clinics, has recently become an active part of Rosemead Connections. She will be discussing three programs her group supports in this area:
1. Lauras Law, which facilitates outpatient treatment for the seriously mentally ill .
2. the California Advocacy network, which deals with legislation and improvement of mental health services
3. FrontLine, a support program offering education and resources for military families and Vets
The November 1, 2012, meeting will be held at the California Mission Inn.

Fall Book Sale - organized by the Friends of the Rosemead Library! Really good buys on a large selection of gently used adult, juvenile, teen, magazines, movies, children's books and, books in different languages! Purchases help support the library's children, adult, and teen programs! The book sale runs from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Please bring a bag or box for the items you purchase.

Veterans Standdown - special encampment adjacent to Whittier Narrows armory featuring services and tent housing along with food and recognition for a projected 1000 homeless veterans.

Thursday, November 8, 2012 Rosemead Kiwanis Meeting
Board Meeting A meeting of the Rosemead Kiwanis Club Board of Directors will be the feature of this weeks luncheon meeting.
The November 8, 2012, meeting will be held at the Bahooka Family Restaurant,( 4501 N. Rosemead Blvd, in Rosemead on the west side of the Lower Azusa Road intersection) due to unavailability of our usual CMI location facility. An agenda will be circulated to Board members in advance.

Parent/Child Workshop -- 10:30 am 11:30 am for children 0-5 years old and their parents/caregivers. During this special time, the library provides the setting in which the child and the parent can play together while also introducing the parent to some of the resources available to help them in the rewarding, but challenging task of parenting a child.

Mayor's Prayer Breakfast - In honor of our veterans the City of Rosemead and the Rosemead Kiwanis Club revive Rosemead's historic prayer breakfast. The event will run fro 8:30-10:30 at the Garvey Community Center. It will feature food, inspirational music, motivational speaker Jimmy Weldon and opportunity for non-denominational fellowship.

SAT vs ACT Workshop - Courtesy of the Princeton review this workshop from, 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm delineates the differences between the two tests for potential college students. It also addresses questions such as whether schools accept only one test? Which is longer? What about subject tests?

Thursday November 15, 2012 Regular Kiwanis Meeting
San Gabriel Mountains Forever - the Los Angeles Board of Supervisors has endorsed creation of a San Gabriel Mountains national recreation area similar to that presently in the Santa Monica mountains. This is an area that includes 70% of the open space in Los Angeles County and is the source of one third of our drinking water
The endorsement came in the wake of an extended study and consideration of various options. Now local governments are starting to endorse the concept, which will preserve 36,000 acres of wilderness while optimizing public use of other portions. More information can be found at this website.
Our speaker, Natalie Garnica, will acquaint us with specifics of the project in this presentation. The November 15, 2012, meeting of the RKC will be held at the California Mission Inn beginning with lunch at 12:10

Vet Hunters Melanie Villareal of the South El Monte based Vet Hunters group and associates will review the recent stand down encampment for 1000 homeless veterans in El Monte.
Also featured will be an overview of the support network available to those who have served their country and a discussion of how those who have been disenfranchised are being reconciled to the system.

October Baby Film - a free screening of this film about the adopted survivor of an attempted abortion will be featured at the Thursday, November 29, 2012, meeting of Rosemeads Community Connections Forum beginning at 6:00, The forum convenes at the Rosemead Safety Center, 8301Garvey (corner of Charlotte, one block east of San Gabriel Blvd).
