We also had as CMI special guests residents Geri Chisholm, and Gladys Newkirk.

Announcements

Carol covered our successful involvement in Rosemead ’s 9/11 Artifact campaign – reported on in detail in last week’s Kiwanicle.  She did note that three of our participants shared last place but still drew appreciation for their participation.

Geri and Gladys were thanked for their collection of used eyeglasses for utilization by Kiwanis International.

Happy $

Jan Robertson shared pictures of a recent family campout with her kids and grandkids.  She also offered to share her newly perfected challah recipe and noted that the upcoming installation at the Dinsmoor house already has over 20 RSVPs.

Bob Bruesch lamented the performance of UCLA’s team – but rejoiced in the fact that two more Garvey District schools have exceeded the 800 level on the school’s standardized tests (there are four more yet to ome).

Frank DiNoto reported on a blood drive he has helped conduct for many years.  This year 134 pints of blood were collect5ed. Don and Scott Wick from our club also participated; Frank also informed the club of the donation of twenty books to Maryvale as part of our ongoing support of that facility’s resource center.

Scott Wick plugged the availability of apple picking at Oak Glen this coming weekend

Jerlene Hales noted that she may soon be getting her car back after a month in the shop – a problem which did not deter her from passing on books to two schools in Covina (Jerlene serves as a RIF Board Member).

Dave Baaron apologized for leaving Lou Reade’s credit line off of a picture from the Kwanicle appearing in the WSGV Journal of which he is the editor.

Elizabeth Landing reported on her attendance at a family reunion in Indiana

Ken Pike expressed happiness over everyone else’s happiness

Board meeting

Carol Mahoney presided. Mario Manzano read the prior meeting minutes and Elizabeth Lending distributed financial reports; both were approved without change.

Old Business:

Duck races – considerable tine was spent sorting out conflicts surrounding the duck race fundraiser sponsored by Glendale Kiwanis. Any Kiwanis Club and selected approved groups are allowed to sell tickets. Once a certain threshold is reached a portion of the proceeds are rebated to the Club or group - the percentage increasing based on volume.  The problem for the RKC is that while we have bee a seller in past years this year we have not registered for this year. We find ourselves in potential competition with two groups we actively support – RIF and a consortium of Boys and Girl’s Clubs which includes the WSGVB&G Club. It was moved and passed that the RKC recommend purchasing of duck tickets through either of the two supported groups rather than trying to qualify ourselves.

New business:

Solicitations by speakers – it was noted that appeals for funds by guest speakers should be cleared with the president; program chairpersons should make sure speakers are aware of this concern.

Savannah Cemetery – Bob Bruesch reported that the cemetery has a new board and is moving forwards towards obtaining State “historical site” status. The cemetery is taking a hit of $1700 in funding due to discontinuation of Rosemead ’s Oktoberfest.

Kiwanis clothing – it was noted that purchases from the Kiwanis International store help benefit KI operations, not the KI Foundation.  Local clubs can use the Kiwanis logo n items which do not duplicate those sold by the store – and the atter is possibly a more economical and flexible way of going. Lou Reade was assigned the job of securing and coordinating information in this area.

Lincoln Training Center – it has been proposed that we host the monthly birthday celebration for LTC clients.- estimated to be about 20 in number – the 3rd Wednesday of each month for one hour  beginning in January. President Carol stated that she has determined that we have both the money and manpower required.  On this basis the proposal was adopted.

Committee Reports – were abbreviated due to time considerations:

Membership Committee – Ron Robertson reported that we have qualified for Distinguished Club status this year but that qualifications next year will be somewhat different – we are planning to qualify again under the revised rules

Finance Committee – Frank Dinoto reported that 104 dictionaries have been supplied with Kiwanis stickers as classroom reference aids to Garvey Schools

Administration Committee – Scott Wick is to serve as program chairperson for October, Jan Robertson for November, Bob Bruesch for December.   The member discussion project is poised for launch in late October using materials from KI plus selected excerpts from a tamu.edu download..

Public Relations Committee – Art Landing reported that a listing of all prior RKC presidents has been posted to the rosemeadkiwanis.org website; effort will be made to secure details about the presidents and their terms over he next year. Dave Baaron and Jan Robertson will explore development of the Club’s moribund Facebook page.

Chairpersons of other committees or their designates were not present.
