LTC July Birthday Celebration and Commendation – Four Rosemead Kiwanians (Bob Bruesch, Art Landing, Carol Mahoney and Mario Manzano) participated in the RKC’s monthly hosting of a birthday celebration for clients of the Lincoln Training Center. This month there were 19 celebrants.

The Lincoln Training Center has recently received a letter of commendation from Wes Roberson of the California Department of Rehabilitation This letter is reproduced below:

“ It is my pleasure to write this letter of support on behalf of Lincoln Training Center. Belinda Owens and her team are consummate professionals who provide superior employment services for people with disabilities. Each staff member is passionate about the mission of Lincoln Training Center and it is this invaluable quality of their work ethic that facilitates the success of Lincoln Training Center within the community.

“Lincoln training center has developed creative ays to provide unique opportunities for persons with disabilities in a stagnant economy. Through their diligence, collaboration and willingness to go the extra mile for their consumer, they are continually building bridges between employers and persons with disabilities.

“Lincoln Training Center is at the forefront of the paradigm shift in how employment services are to be delivered.”

Now housed in its own facility in South El Monte with a branch in Roseville, the LTC has come a long way from its initial involvement with the RKC nearly sixty years ago (and today other Kiwanis Clubs as well).  We are happy for our long and ongoing relationship.

Dr. Jerry Liu, newly appointed outreach co-ordinator for what is the largest Buddhist affiliated university in North America, reviewed three programs they will be implementing this fall:

1)   Public Safety Administration Program

2)   Mandatory Community Service for students

3)   Internship program for students with organizations and businesses.

Dr. Liu, who has had extensive experience in both the private and public sector, maintained that both government and education establishments tend to have world view tunnel vision as compared to business. With a student body that is 50% domestic and 50% International he feels that students there need to be taught to be teachers, not just mastery of skills.  Traditional education can give studens a time fram of rthe past and a structural framework of the present, but the future is up to the individual.

In the area of Public Safety the University will be conducting programs focused on homeland security and natural disasters – examples of current framework and past time frame. This takes time well spent in laying a foundation, but when the time comes to implement reactions in a real time scenario it will take the ability to think and react based on circumstances. We therefore need to train students about what to do when an unexpected curveball comes, because no one can predict every contingency.

Dr. Liu stressed that the lecture/memorize approach to education is simply not enough when it comes to dealing with he furure. We must relate the textboox historical timeline to current events in preparation for meeting currently unknown future needs. China is an example of a current dynamo facing major problems. It is water deficient and the reallocation of available supplies to urban areas are causing crops to suffer. They are using their trade surpluses to tie up raw materials everywhere but to what end if it becomes ecologically unfeasible to use them?  In order to see how all the pieces fit together individuals must pay attention to the backstory behind the heasdlines.

UW currently has 200 students, only half of whom who live on campus. They have dormitory space for many more. As the student body increases Dr. Liu sees it as essential that they interact with the “real world” – hence the need for community service and internships.  He concluded by stating that he hoped for ongoing positive interaction between the RKC and UW.
