Announcements and News

RIF Orientation meeting – please do not forget to mark your calendar for this Wednesday September 28, 2011, if you are a RIF coordinator. Major changes are in the offing due to RIF-SoCal’s loss of earmark funding (see Susan Coscarelli’s remarks at right).

LTC Birthday Party Success – the monthly birthday celebration for clients of the Lincoln Training Center was held on Wednesday, September 21, 2011.  A record number of LTC clients (29) and Kiwanians (7) participated.

The next monthly celebration is slated for Wednesday, October 19, 2011. We would love seeing more members get in on the fun – dancing the hokey pokey and serving up the lunches. An on-the-spot orientation will be given to Kiwanians coming for the first time, so don’t feel shy!

More Garvey Park/Duff School Famiy Fun and Health Fair Details - Bob Bruesch and Sergio Medrano supplemented last week’s Kiwanicle report, noting that passports with a check-off list were included for all attendees. 10 checks on the passport including a workshop equaled a free lunch at Panda – over 700 wound up being redeemed.

Woodcraft Rangers supplied a mobile skate park. It was noted that the park is adaptable enough to cover almost any area. At Duff an area as large as two basketball courts was utilized for the set-up of all modular components. . Parents reportedly appreciated the intense supervision and coaching to insure the safety of all who participated. Participants ranged from 4 to 17 years old at an average of 24 skaters per hour.

GSD nursing, head start and child development staff were ecstatic over participation. Other supporting groups included the Asia-Pacific Foundation, WSGV Boys and Girls Club, DPSS, Garfield Hospital, PTA, and the Scouts.

Fifty volunteers from Kaiser (who do several such fairs a year) also participated, especially as translators. They declared that this event was the best attended of its kind they have seen.

Final review of the event will be held shortly, but there is already consensus that it will be repeated next year.

SWOT Meeting – see under September 27, 2011, on calendar below for details

High Speed Rail Alternative – the SGV Council of Governments (SGVCG) is endorsing a proposal of Supervisor Mike Antonivich that wouldessentially upgrade the Metrolink commuter rail system rather than building a brand new high speed rail system through the Valley along the I-10 Freeway or SR-60 Freeway corridors.“

This proposal reflects the funding realities which appear likely to derail the proposed Sacramento to San Diego high speed rail system. The Rosemead City Council will be considering endorsing the SGVCG position at its September 27, 2011, meeting beginning at 7:00

Fall Fiesta – a memo from the City of Rosemead notes that there will be a “Fall Fiesta” held in Rosemead Park on Saturday, October 15, 2011, from 12:00 pm - 6:00 pm. Details will be supplied as they become available.

RSD Health Fair – The fifth annual RSD (Rosemead School District) Health and Fitness Fair will be held Saturday, October 22, 2011, at Encinita Elementary School beginning at 8:00 am.. It will feature a $2.00 pancake breakfast ($1.00 for children) with all proceeds going to Encinita Elementary.

There will also be specialty health and community resource booths and a run/walk race against drugs for ages Kindergarten-adult. Entry fee for the race is $5 and all participants will receive a free t-shirt. RHS Key Club has committed to supplying 25 volunteers, There will also be a Kiwanis booth staffed by Frank Quintanilla and other Kiwanians.

Program Comments

Program for this meeting was a trivia contest conducted by Administrative Committee Chairman Scott Wick, who supplied a list of 20 questions to five teams.  The team comprised of Art Landing, Elizabeth Landing and Lou Reade won with a total of eleven correct answers.

HAPPY DOLLAR REMARKS

Carol Mahoney – happy that LTC monthly birthday event featured both a recortd number of clients and participating Kiwanians

Frank Quintanilla was happy to see Susan Coscarelli and hear that she is about to become a full fledged RKC member

Frank DiNoto – noted that check for RIF is in works and will likely be presented concurrent with Suzanne’s induction.

Art Landing - regretted hat he will not be present for next week’s meeting

Elizabeth Landing - gave thanks that her doctors have excluded macular degeneration and glaucoma as being part of her eye problems.

Sandy Johnson – happy for Health Fair success

Ted Saulino – happy to be babysitting grandkids
