Rose Float Decoration – Kiwanis Division 10 on December 26 will be serving meals to rose float volunteers as Rosemont Pavilion from 5:30-7:00 pm.  The K-family has responsibility this year for decorating twelve floats and will be using teams of around 5000 members in multiple shifts.

Rose Float Luncheon --- See calendar entry for December 30 below for details of Rose Float luncheon featuring Kiwanis International President Alan Penn plus an artist’s rendering of the 2012 Kiwanis Float.

Masthead Change  – Although the scheduled RKC/RKF Board meeting did not occur for lack of a quorum at the beginning of the meeting it was requested that names of Board members be added to the Kiwanicle masthead. This wish has been accommodated beginning with the current issue (and will be done retroactively for newly indexed issues as well)..

SLP News

RHS Key Club President Elnora Phu has given a congratulatory shout out to Rosemead High School’s CIF Club for their cooperation in supporting the 2011 Yoplait Yogurt lid drive. According to this Internet link the company is donating $10 for each pink lid submitted up to a maximum of $2 million to the fight against breast cancer.

Education Review

Teachers Writing Own Textbooks? – A novel approach, but one that apparently works under the right conditions, writes Erin Richards in an article from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel featured in the 12/14/2011 issue of Education Week, found here.

Its all part of an approach based upon a model in Finland that has “resulted in soaring test scores” and is “widely (and heatedly) under discussion in the U.S.”

Comparing the approach to that of Montessori one California teacher comments “As a social studies teacher in an urban public high school in San Diego, I've found that project based learning and Socratic seminars are both helpful approaches to build engagement and collaboration in my classroom.  PBL, if it is done right, helps to decentralize the role of the teacher.  I become facilitator and coach rather than "fount of knowledge."”

A GOOD THOUGHT

Why is Q&A learning better retained than lecturing or books?

“Research has demonstra-ted time and again that asking questions improves learning.

“It has further shown that the higher the level of learning* of question, the higher the achievement.

“Learners learn better when answering questions than when they merely listen.”

                    --- Rick Yount
