Special Report: Virtual
Classroom
Imagine an online virtual classroom.
You have a computer monitor in front of you, optional toll-free computer
headset or a regular telephone, possibly a web cam peering at you. The set-up
is operating in real time, with small windows offering a choice of information
sources: chat room, white board, PowerPoint presentation, text document, spreadsheet. On the side, assuming they have webcams,
are optional pictures of other participants –
when they speak you can see their faces and judge their expressions.
Material from any of the participant’s computers can be displayed in
center screen, as can the material from the small windows. For maximum effect
any of the above can be raised to full screen. Its all
under the control of the meeting host.
Remarkably it doesn’t matter if a participant is running a PC or a MAC,
Linux or Windows. This program runs on any computer with enough memory to handle Adobe Flash and a high speed connection.
There are no operating system or manufacturer constraints.
Lag time? Mere seconds as opposed to around ten seconds or more on
comparable products (OK – so maybe there is no real comparison since this is a
step beyond existing versions of Webex
or gotomeeting)
The purpose? To have group
meetings, instructional tutorials – its up to the
owners. But when the meeting is over there is a surprise:
The entire session has been recorded and is available for password
protected playback. And since it’s a Flash file participants
can review it as much as they want and even add notes.
Sound like a fantasy? Nope – it exists today, Best of all it has
been developed and is supported by a local firm with whom several Kiwanians are already familiar. It will be demonstrated
live at the Rosemead Kiwanis meeting on June 19.
Unbelievable? Make your
meeting reservations by Tuesday – then come see for yourself.
