NEWS

8th GRADERS MAY FACE STATE ALGEBRA TEST - All California 8th graders will be required to take Algebra 1 and be tested on it as part of the state’s accountability system, perhaps as early as the 2009-10 school year, under a controversial state board of education decision. The plan must first past muster under federal accountability standards.

According to a release from edweek.org, California was forced to move on the issue under pressure from the U.S. Department of Education to meet an Aug. 1 deadline to align its testing program with its state math standards in 8th grade. While more than half the state’s 8th graders already take algebra and are tested on it, the rest are instead presently tested on 6th and 7th grade general mathematics skills.

JANET CHIN DOES NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH  The Garvey School Board member reports via the M Janet Chin websiteWe recently invited 30 of our neighbors to the first neighborhood watch meeting in many years. We had the meeting right in our DRIVEWAY! It was a little weird but the turnout was great. The Rosemead Public Safety Center headed by Don Anderson is really focused on community safety. I’m very thankful to do my part as a neighborhood ’Block Captain.’ I hope we continue to meet.”

MACY’S/RIF OFFER DISCOUNT: Donate $3 to RIF as a Macy’s customer during August and you’ll recieve a $10 discount on a purchase of $50 or more – that’s a synopsis of the attached flyer supplied by Kiwanian Susan Coscarelli, who also heads RIF-SoCal. Last year from this promotion RIF So-Cal received over $100,000 – as excellent as this was, the need this year is even greater. A flyer with details was attached to last week’s issue of the RKC Reporter.
