RKC REPORTER SPECIAL BULLETIN – 12/216/2008

Special to all members and friends of the Rosemead Kiwanis Club

MEETING CHANGE NOTICE: Due to a daylong Xmas CMI event there will be no Rosemead Kiwanis Club meeting at the California Mission Inn ON Thursday December 18.

Instead we will be having an interclub with the El Monte Kiwanis Club at a special location: the Byron Thompson School for Orthopedically Handicapped Children, 4544 Maxson Road El Monte. (see Reservations and Directions below). Time will be 12:00 noon on the same day.

SPECIAL CHILDREN’S PROGRAM: Featured will be a presentation of Xmas songs by the Thompson School’s Bellringers Choir, made up of physically challenged students from the school.  The group has been featured in presentations at numerous locations and is comprised of special needs kids from the fourth thru the eighth grades, organized and directed for the last thirty two years by Wayne Martin of the Whittier Lion’s Club.

According to an article in the May, 2008, issue of  The Main Lion” this group is “the result of a long held dream of teaching these kids to play and perform. They use a variety of adaptive techniques and modifications to the bells that allow even the weakest child to be included in the choir. Wayne has done most of these modifications himself and the group is “world renown” with performances at Disneyland, the L. A. Music’s Center’s Special Arts Festival, the National Convention of the Council for Exceptional Children, and Chapman College.”

RESERVATIONS: Pizza and Mojos from Shakey’s are being specially ordered, so we have been asked to provide a head count by Wednesday at noon.  Please respond by email or call Art Landing at 626/292-6550 and leave a message.

DIRECTIONS: The best way to reach the Byron Thompson School is to go two blocks south from the intersection of Maxon with Lower Azusa Road (three bLocks East of Peck Road or two intersections west of the off ramp from the 605 freeway).
