SPECIAL RKC REPORT –

Metro Gold Line Extension Hearings

Rosemead Residents Encouraged to Attend

An extension of the Metro Gold Line through Montebello east to South El Monte is one of four options being considered in upcoming public workshops. The City of Rosemead is inviting and encouraging its residents to participate in the workshops.

The term “Gold Line” refers to Metro light rail transit lines extending from downtown Los Angeles to the San Gabriel Valley and east. The original “Gold line” followed the old Santa Fe railway tracks from Los Angeles to Pasadena and is now being extended to Montclair Metro recently opened a second “Gold Line” route from Union Station to East Los Angeles, terminating at Atlantic Blvd

Four alternatives for using available Prop R (the voter-approved County sales tax increase) funding relative to this second route are under consideration:

* Extension of the East Los Angeles Gold Line along route 60 to South El Monte. Proponents envision a later extension to the proposed new football stadium in the City of Industry.

* Extension of the as Los Angeles Gold Line south through Commerce then following Washington Blvd  to Whittier. Proponents see this as laying the groundwork for eventual further extension to Orange County.

* No build – this presumably would allow funding of other projects in the Metro service area or issuing of fewer bonds.

* Transportation Systems Management – this approach would enhance existing bus service rather than utilizing rail.

Before any alternative can be selected public hearings and an environmental impact report are required. There will be several hearing opportunities in February, including

Wednesday, Feb. 24
6 - 8pm
South El Monte Senior Center, Dining Room
1556 Central Ave.
South El Monte

Thursday, Feb. 25
6 - 8pm
Senior Center at City Park, South Wing
115 S Taylor Ave.
Montebello

The Rosemead City Council is in support of the State Route 60 (SR-60) Light Rail Transit. It is a member of the SR60 Gold Line Extension Coalition along with the cities of South El Monte, Montebello, Monterey Park, and El Monte.
