NEWS

 

Yard Sale Success – Rosemead’s “Community Yard Sale” in the Southern California Edison parking lot on Sunday, March 21, 2010, was a rousing success according to the RKC’s Lou Reade. “The vendors looked quite happy with the community turn out. I know this, because we went home with a carload of things that I just might need sooner or later! But most of all, everybody had a good time.” Lou and RKC President Carol Mahoney were among those supporting Frank Quintanilla and his brother John in running the shaved ice concession.  

 

RHS KEY Officers Installed - the 2010-2011 officers for the Rosemead High School KEY Club were installed this past Wednesday, March 18, 2010 at Petrillo’s.  The group of over 30 KEY Clubbers and Kiwanians had a separate room all to themselves and enjoyed a variety of pasta and pizza.  Kiwanians Art Landing and Frank Quintanilla represented Rosemead Kiwanis.

               THURSDAY, MARCH 25, 2010 – RKC MEETING (Regular meeting)*

 

(NOTE: Due to our normal California Mission Inn meeting facility being used for a CMI event this meeting will be held at Denny’s restaurant, 3643 Rosemead Blvd [just south of Marshall St] Rosemead.)

 

Spam, Scams and Viruses - Michael Lattimore of Southern California Edison’s Information Technology Risk Management Department will cover threats facing home computer users, desktop protection strategies and identity theft protection tips.

 

THURSDAY, APRIL 1, 2010 – RKC MEETING (Regular meeting)*

 

KEY Leaders – Kiwanis international has developed a weekend program to give teens an opportunity to experience “personal development, growth and fellowship that are cornerstones of Kiwanis and its school service programs.” It enables Teens age 14-18 to explore new ideas and challenges, building enduring friendships in a safe supportive environment.”  RKC President Carol Mahoney will be reviewing this program in detail as a possible future RKC activity.

 

SATURDAY, APRIL 3, 2010 – HEALTH FAIR (Special Event)

 

Kiwanis One Project - the Division 10 K-Family clubs (Aktion, Builders, KEY and Kiwanis) have designated a Health Fair in San Gabriel as this year’s Kiwanis One project – see Special Report at the end of this Newsletter.  

 

THURSDAY, APRIL 8, 2010 – RKC MEETING (Regular meeting)*

 

“A Word from a Veteran" – actually three veterans.  The first, Ms. Doris Zavala, is. 90 yrs. old. She was one of the First Women to be assigned to the U.S. Army Air Corps. during WW2.  She will be accompanied by her daughter, Roxanne Zavala, A Gardena Kiwanian.  The second, Mr. Louis Morales, served with the Army in Vietnam. He is presently the Chief of Staff for the V. F.W. 23 Dist..  The third will be Sgt John Benitez, who served with the Marines in Viet-Nam.

Board Meeting -- In a continuation of recent practice, the RKC and RKC Foundation boards will hold a joint meeting open to participation by all RKC members. The meeting will include Committee reports and discussion of upcoming activities.

 

THURSDAY, APRIL 15, 2010 – PUBLIC SAFETY MEETING (Special Event)

 

Monthly Safety Meeting 7:00 pm at Rosemead’s Public Safety Center, 8301 Garvey Avenue for all Neighborhood Watch captains, concerned residents, school officials and business owners.  The topic for April has not yet been supplied but will be listed when available. WEDNESDAY, APRIL 21, 2010 – FOLK MUSIC EVENING (Special Event)

 

Folk Music Evening – a benefit performance for the upcoming Rosemead Relay for Life featuring the “Folk Collection Quartet” The group will be leading a program “from ‘Blowin in the Wind’ and ‘This Land is Your Land’ to ‘If I had a Hammer’ and the famous ‘MTA.’”

 

Comments one Kiwanian who has seen the group perform “the show is nostalgic, entertaining, and family friendly, blending music with jokes and humor. Its OK to sing along … most people do.”

Special Report

 

KIDS CAN VISIT THE DOCTORS—FREE!

 

A free Children’s Health and Safety Fair will be included at this year’s San Gabriel Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast and Easter Egg Hunt Saturday, April 3rd. The “Fair” is new to the breakfast this year and will be open from 9 AM to 1 PM. Children up to age 18 will be able to visit the dentist, eye doctor and medical doctor for free; if needed they will receive certificates for further medical consultation.  This means checking their (and other family member’s) eligibility for all free and low cost ongoing healthcare programs, which can include free immunizations and laboratory services. 

 

The goal of the Health and Safety Fair is to make sure that all San Gabriel Valley residents have access to free or low cost health care, especially if they are uninsured or underinsured.

 

Kiwanis Division 10 K-Family and community partners are sponsoring 14 health and safety-related games booths, a moon bouncer, and plenty of free goodie bags. Various community organizations will have information tables as well. There is absolutely no charge for any of the games or services at the Health and Safety Fair. The K-Family volunteers include 10 adult Kiwanis Clubs, 12 high school KEY Clubs, and 2 middle school Builders Clubs.

 

The annual Easter Celebration, a longtime family favorite organized annually by San Gabriel Kiwanis in conjunction with the San Gabriel Parks and Recreation Department, will have lots of food, games and Easter prizes. Activities begin at 6 AM at Smith Park, 232 West Broadway, between Del Mar and Junipero Serra, in San Gabriel.

 

The K-ONE Day Health and Safety project is led by KEY Club Lt. Governors Chloe Hsia and Kayla Huynh, and supported by adult Kiwanis Clubs, led by Kiwanis Division 10 Lt. Governor Jan Robertson. 

 

Specific health oriented services will include CHDP (Child Health and Disability Prevention) Program, vision and hearing tests  growth and nutrition screening, dental screening, TB testing, immunization and sports/school physicals. Parents are requested to bring their children’s immunization records if available.
