Our City fathers are starting out May with two major events – a city open house and a community forum.  See details below,

 

        UPCOMING MEETINGS AND EVENTS:

 

TUESDAY, APRIL 27, -  Rosemead City Combined Meeting

 

The Rosemead City Council and community development commission will be holding a joint meeting beginning at 6:00 in the Rosemead City Hall Council Chamber, 8838 E. Valley Boulevard Rosemead, California 91770.  Among significant items to be brought up:

 

·                    Newsracks -17 page newsrack ordinance designed to insure pedestrian access and restrict distribution of offensive materials.

 

§        Rail route - Discussion of whether to whether the city should endorse an I-10 as opposed to an I-60 route path for the SGV portion of the high speed Los Angeles-San Francisco high speed rail system

 

§        Appointments – Mayor Gary Taylor has designated potential city representatives to a number of local agencies.  This list has been posted to the city website and may be formally approved Tuesday.

 

THURSDAY, APRIL 29, 2010 – RKC MEETING (Regular meeting)*

 

Trivia Time – once again our RKC President, Carol Mahoney, will preside over teams of our RKC members vying for primacy in the world of the obscure but interesting information.

 

TUESDAY, MAY 4, 2010 – Rosemead City Open House

 

From 5:30 - 8:00 p.m. the City of Rosemead will host an “Open House” including:

 

• Booths providing information about City programs and

  services
• Fitness and enrichment classes for residents to try at no

  cost; $3 for non-residents
• Self-guided facility tours
• Emergency preparedness supplies that can be purchased

   at low cost
• Raffle prizes + special offers from Subway, UFC, and

  WalMart
• Free refreshments

 

At 6:00 there will be a presentation on community improvements, including the proposed aquatic centers at Garvey and Rosemead Parks.  

 

There will also be free (to Rosemead residents - $3 for non-residents) introductory 30-minute classes according to the following schedule:

 

                                 6:30 - Zumba Fitness Class
                                            Pencil Sketching Class

 

                                 7:00 - UFC Fitness Class
                                           Billiards Instruction

 

                                  7:30 - Belly Dancing Class
                                            Painting Class

 

                Location of the Open House will be the Garvey Community Center,

                9108 Garvey Avenue in Rosemead

 

 

WEDNESDAY , MAY 5, 2010 – Community meeting

 

Rosemead Plunge Remodel - At 6:00 p.m. there will be a community meeting at the Rosemead Park pool house, 9155 Mission Drive  in Rosemead.  Focus will be conceptual plans for the new Aquatic Center replacing the existing 54 year-old pool, which is now drained and out of commission. 

 

THURSDAY, MAY 6, 2010 – RKC MEETING (Regular meeting)*

 

School Funding Crises -  Dolores Preciado  Interim Superintendent of the Garvey District will   discuss the crises caused by having to rely on funds from the State and Federal governments to supplement limited property tax revenues. This shortfall has resulted in proposal for layoffs and salary reductions and has resulted in elimination of some support services and educational tools.  Groups such as the Rosemead and Garvey educational foundations, as well as our own RKF and local corporations, have tried to plug gaps, but can only do so much.

 

THURSDAY, MAY 13, 2010 – RKC MEETING (Regular meeting)*

 

Board Meeting -- In a continuation of recent practice, the RKC and RKC Foundation boards will hold a joint meeting open to participation by all RKC members. The meeting will include Committee reports and discussion of upcoming activities.

 

THURSDAY, MAY 20, 2010 – RKC MEETING (Regular meeting)*

 

Boys/Girls Club Kiwanis Partnership Report – Kiwanian Tim Motts, executive director of the West San Gabriel Valley Boys and Girls Cub, will discuss the Club’s latest local project: a childhood obesity center

 

THURSDAY, MAY 27, 2010 – RKC MEETING (Regular meeting)*

 

Guys and Dolls – a revival of the famous Broadway hit, presented beginning at 1:15 by the talented thespians of the Temple Intermediate School. Please note the time designed to maximize participation of California Mission Inn residents. Our RKC meeting will commence at 12:30.

                                 (north of Mission and south of Grand ˝ block on west  side of
