        NEWS

 

City beautification Members of Rosemead’s Public Services Team removed graffiti from 101 locations for the two week period ending 5/13, according to the City Manager’s Green Sheet report for May 13, 2010.  Additionally Team members “did weed abatement along the Rosemead Boulevard medians plus removing and replanting a new tree on the median in front of 3939 Rosemead Blvd. Debris and trash were cleared along Walnut Grove, San Gabriel and Del Mar slopes as well as along Ramona north & south. Along the parkway of the 2400-2800 block of Del Mar weed abatement and light trimming was also done.”

 

Environmental awards banquet Rosemead recently hosted the Annual Environmental Awards for LARA (Los Angeles Regional Agency - a consortium of 16 member cities in Los Angeles County. The Agency was formed by

environmentally conscious recycling advocates from the member cities ).

 

The purpose of the awards banquet, coordinated by Rosemead’s Pat Platt, was to recognize businesses and organizations who have made extraordinary efforts to implement recycling programs.”

 

This year’s theme was “No Trash.” The table settings were made entirely of materials that are recycled, recyclable or compostable. The plates used were made of compressed leaves; the utensils were made of compressed bark and could be placed in a compost pile.

 

City Government Report At a Council meeting on May 11 approval of applications for medical marijuana dispensaries and adult businesses was prohibited. In addition a moratorium was declared on new massage establishments and massage service providers. A measure to tentatively approve increase allowable bingo payouts to $500 was approved (final action is slated for the Council’s May 25 meeting).  

 

On Tuesday, May 18, 2010, at 5:00 pm there will be a special meeting of the Council devoted to candidates for the City’s Planning Commission

 

Construction and real estate news Cellular phone service provider T-Mobil has requested permission to share in usage of an existing SCE transmission site at Mission and Walnut Grove….construction of the new organically-oriented Fresh and Easy market at Rosemead and Mission is proceeding nicely (opening slated for August) and job opportunities have been posted on the Internet (here) ….. SCE has purchased the former Countrywide processing center on Walnut Grove for expansion purposes.

Boys/Girls Club Kiwanis Partnership Report – Kiwanian Tim Motts, executive director of the West San Gabriel Valley Boys and Girls Cub, will discuss the Club’s latest local project: a childhood obesity center

 

                THURSDAY, MAY 20, 2010 - Monthly Safety Meeting

 

Registered Sex Offenders will be the featured topic beginning at 7:00 in the the Rosemead Public Safety Center, 8301 Garvey Avenue. Deputy Orejel from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department will make a presentation including:

 

·     How sex offenders are classified

·     Current Laws

·     Megan's Law and Megan's website in tracking sex offenders in

    our community

Guys and Dolls – a revival of the famous Broadway hit, presented beginning at 1:15 by the talented thespians of the Temple Intermediate School. Please note the time designed to maximize participation of California Mission Inn residents. Our (abbreviated) RKC luncheon meeting will commence at 12:30.

Rosemead Safety DepartmentRosemead Police Chief and Safety Department head Tim Murakami will discuss the year’s past developments and improved crime statistics and the interface between the Department and our K-family of clubs as it pertains to community activities, neighborhood watch and disaster preparedness.

Board Meeting -- In a continuation of recent practice, the RKC and RKC Foundation boards will hold a joint meeting open to participation by all RKC members. The meeting will include Committee reports and discussion of upcoming activities.

Science Olympiad TeamRosemead’s Muscatel Science Olympiad team will illustrate the program that was utilized at the national championship competition in Illinois on the weekend of May 22, 2010. Please note that this meeting will be held at Muscatel Middle School!
