Special Report

                            GARVEY STUDENT IN

            NATIONAL HISTORY DAY COMPETITION

June 13, 2010 – A Garvey Intermediate School 8th grade student, William Nguyen, will be representing California this week in the National History Day competition in Maryland. The Rosemead Kiwanis Foundation has contributed towards his expenses for the event.

William already competed for the school in both the regional event held at Azusa Pacific University this past March and the California State Finals held in Pasadena three weeks ago.  His history topic was “Eli Whitney and the Cotton Gin”.  His event was Intermediate Individual Performance.

In his presentation William actually assumed the role of Eli Whitney and explained to the audience what impact his invention had on the history of our nation.  His teacher, Pat Kasababian, has had the class participate in the History Day competition for over 30 years

The History Day competition involves almost a half million students across our nation in the event each year.  Begun nearly 40 years ago, History Day seeks to involve students in doing basic research on historical topics.  Each year the theme changes but they have maintained the three basic divisions of Elementary, Intermediate and High School student.  They allow several modes of reporting the results of their research – written research paper, poster, display, performance, and the recently added webpage.  Students are allowed to compete individually or as a member of a group of up to six.

We wish William the best of luck in the competition and hopes he brings home Garvey’s second National Division trophy.
