ROSEMEAD CONNECTIONS FORUM MEETINGS RESUME

2012 events were the focus of the January meeting of the Rosemead Connections forum, which resumed at the Rosemead Safety Center January 26, 2012, after a two month hiatus. Seven items of note were covered, including:

Youth Summit Wen-Li Jen of the Asia-Pacific Family Center noted the upcoming Youth Summit, Saturday, February 25, 2012, at Garvey Intermediate School.  It is open to all teens, not just those from Rosemead, and the workshops are closed to adults to optimize teen participation.

There are seventy co-sponsors this year, with booths and two sets of hour-long workshops, the latter beginning at 10:00 am and 11:30 am, respectively. A youth talent showcase is scheduled to start at 2:30 pm.  A Financial Literacy booth featuring the Cool Stuff book from Rosemead Kiwanis will be included.

Graffiti Ordinance - City Manager Jeff Allred noted that the city’s anti-graffiti ordinance increasing parental responsibility is now on the books and Police Chef Tim Murakami noted that enforcement has already begun in one case.

Yard Sale and Fair - March 3, 2012, will be a community yard sale and emergency preparedness fair at Southern California Edison – as with many events in this article  please click on link to the Community Calendar in the right hand column of this newsletter for greater details.

Rabies Shots and Dog Licensing - Thursday, March 29, 2012, will be the next rabies clinic and animal licensing  event at the Rosemead Safety Center, 8301 Garvey Blvd,. Running from 6:00-7:30 pm this will be a cash only event – no checks or credit cards. Dogs must be on a leash and cats in a container.

School Site Cleanup Saturday, April  21, 2012, will be school campus clean up day in several Garvey schools. Last year’s effort involving neighbors and community groups not only helped the seven school sites involved but also spilled over into adjacent yards. Chief Murakami noted that clean neighborhoods have greater pride and lower crime rates He advocated community groups extending what is being done on the school sites to Rosemead’s parks as well.

Girls Career Fair Saturday, April 21, 2012, is also the date for Adelante Mujer Latina, an education and career conference for girls ages 12-18 at Pasadena City College. It is featured here and will run from 7:30 am to 3:30 pm. The event, including exhibitor booths, food, and workshops, will run from 8:00am -3:00 pm. A counterpart conference directed at young men was held in October, 2011, and is expected to be reprised this fall. Both events are projects of the Pasadena Youth Center.

Safety Forum Schedule/Promotion - The Rosemead Safety Forms Mandy Wong submitted a tentative schedule of topics for 2012. Presently slated are the following:

         February 16 – Gang awareness

         March 15 – Counterfeit merchandise

April 19 – First quarter Rosemead crime statistics

         May 17 – Drug Awareness

         June 21 – Safety Tips

July 19 – Second quarter Rosemead crime statistics

         August 16 – Emergency preparedness

         September 20 – Traffic awareness

October 18 – Third quarter Rosemead crime statistics

               brainstorming session

At the invitation of Rosemead’s Mayor Pro-Tem Sandra Armenta Art Landing of Rosemead Kiwanis reviewed the availability of topics and materials from the Kiwanis Priority One program. These materials are referenced in detail on the group’s website, here. Some of the topics listed overlap or complement present and past Safety Forum topics. He suggested their use by interested Rosemead Connections groups, especially Churches,  in  promotional efforts to enhance greater public awareness of and participation in the Safety Forum meetings.

True patriotism hates injustice in its own land more than anywhere else.

Take all the robes of all the good judges that have ever lived on the face of the earth, and they would not be large enough to cover the iniquity of one corrupt judge.
                     — Henry Ward Beecher

God’s truth judges created things out of love, and Satan’s truth judges them out of envy and hatred.

                      — Dietrich Bonhoeffer.

God's problem is not that God is not able to do certain things. God's problem is that God loves. Love complicates the life of God as it complicates every life.

                       ---Theologian Douglas John Hall

Anita Brookner says that one mark of true greatness is the refusal to recognize anyone as an enemy.
